Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit Mini Bicycle U-Lock Review: The Best Bike Lock You Can Buy.
Before we look into the Kryptonite New York Fagettaboutit U-lock, perhaps it is a good idea to talk about the Kryptonite lock. This lock is a brand of lock that is owned by the Ingersoll Rand company, and was developed in 1972. It is made from hardened steel, in a U shape, and has a crossbar that can be removed. The locking mechanism is very similar to the ones used by soda vending machines, and laundry mats, is round and completely recessed into the end of the crossbar. While not completely infallible, the Kryptonite lock is one of the best on the market, because of it's design, it's tempered steel construction, and the fact that it's shape makes it hard to tamper with. There are many imitators out there, but if you want the best, then stick with a Kryptonite Lock.

One of the latest Kryptonite Locks is the New York Forgettaboutit Mini U-lock. This product is truly one of the most intimidating locks that this brand has come out with in the last few years, and for many reasons. While small in actual size, only 3.25"x6", it is big on intimidation. First of all the U-tube is a full 18 millimeters thick of hardened steel, larger than the jaw capabilities of most bolt cutters. Then there is the cross bar. This behemoth is almost as big around as a standard beer bottle, with an oversized sleeve, as well as a double deadbolt locking mechanism. It has three keys for it, as well as a light for night locking.
The Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit lock offers a 12 on the security ranking system, the highest level. It is resistant to leverage attacks, bolt cutters, and is ideal for people who need to lock up their bike in any high crime areas. Other security features include a disc-style cylinder, a protective vinyl covering, a center key way, and a dust cover to extend the life of the cylinder itself.

L4m3r from LA,
Paid for itself, worth every penny
I've been using this lock for over a year now, and it's worth every penny. I live on a college campus in Los Angeles, and park my bike outside at night. My last bike was stolen when a thief cut right through the $30 U-lock I had. After that experience, I bought the Fahgettaboutit to protect my new bike.
Sure enough, a few months in, someone attempted to steal my bike while I was at work. The thief failed miserably, managing only to cut through the vinyl sheath on the shackle and scratch the paint on the steel. I think that the thief may have even broken his bolt cutters, because he didn't snip the cable that secured my wheels. The jerk did take the time to unbolt and steal my fork, brakes, handlebars, stem, and shifters, but in saving my frame and wheels this lock paid for itself and then some.
After replacing the stolen components, I invested in a Pitlock set to protect my wheels, brakes, and fork. Most of the remaining hex bolts have been filled with solder to discourage theft. With these measures in place alongside my Kryptonite Fahgettaboutit, I have no worries about leaving my ride outside and no one has made a visible attempt to take it.
Selecting Your Bicycle Lock
A bike lock is an important security apparatus that allows you to lock your bike when you are not with it. A bike lock is attached around the frame of your bike and then attached to another object that is immovable, such as a pole or a bicycle rack. Whether you ride your bike to a store, school or even work you want to be able to leave it unattended without the threat of theft. Bike locks can vary in price and choosing the best one in your price range requires some knowledge and thought.
When looking for a bike lock you will need to take several factors into consideration. You will want a bike lock that cannot be easily broken. Therefore, it is best to purchase a bike lock that is made of a hard metal, such as steel. The less expensive your bike lock is the more flimsy it is made. The various types of bike locks are listed below.
Combination lock: This type of lock can only be opened using the correct numbers, usually three numbers. The typical right-left-right pattern using these three numbers will open your lock. The only drawback is remembering your numbers. Some people have poor memories and this is not an ideal bike lock for those people. If you do purchase this type of bike lock and have trouble remembering your combination, it is a good idea to write it down on a piece of paper and carry it with you if you are going to be out riding your bike and plan on using your bike lock while you are out.
Key lock: This type of bike lock can only be opened with a key. Remember to bring the key with you when you go out on your bike. You can either put it in your pocket or carry it around your neck on a long key ring lanyard. A key lock is usually a bit more difficult to break into than a combination lock and therefore a better choice.
Cable lock: Very flexible and one of the least expensive bike locks, the cable lock is easy to use and offers either a key or combination type of closure. This bike lock is the easiest one to break, however.
U-lock: If you are buying a U-lock purchase the smallest size that you are able to while still being able to attach it. The most popular out of all of the bike locks, the U-lock is not that difficult to break.
O-lock: These require some looking around as they are not available just anywhere. If you are looking to purchase one of these bike locks, visit your neighborhood bike shop. They give your bike the greatest protection and they adjust rather easily. They are more difficult to break.
Motorcycle lock: Extremely heavy, but very well made, a motorcycle lock would be a tough one to break. However, serious competition bikers will not want to carry the extra weight.
Additionally, check the warranty on your bike lock. A good warranty is worth the extra few dollars that you will spend. Picking out your bike lock is more important than most people realize. Make sure that you get the quality that is best suited for what you are.
